A serviceable picture book in the tradition of animal noises and childhood seek-and-find. A calico Kitten who mews and

hisses cannot find her purr, and while her mother comforts her, Kitten goes off in search of it. She asks the barnyard animals in turn if they have her purr, but Dog, of course, has a "woof," Cow a "moo," Pig an "oink," and so on. By nightfall she even asks Owl, who sends her back to her mother with a "hoot." There Kitten snuggles up and finds her purr right inside herself, just where her mother said it would be: "You hear it when you’re happy." The colors are video-clear, the animals

anthropomorphized to a fare-thee-well, and the whole, though charming, just misses being saccharine. (Picture book. 4-7)
