THE CREATION OF SCULPTURE

An excellent overall reference book that not only defines techniques but teaches clearly expressed, open-minded approach to concepts of form, design and the expression of salify through the imagination. Based on the fact that technique and the creative process inseparable, the book deals first, though not too deeply, with the aesthetics of sculpture- tree dimensional design, modern versus traditional- order in space, balance, movement, so forth- how to look at sculpture, how the sculptor himself feels about his work. The mut of media from clay to cast from, and their various properties and proper handling, are treated in subsequent, amply illustrated chapters. Descriptions of methods are not devoid of a great many do's and don'ts which may tend to limit the free approach to creative activity that the writer wants to establish, but they are always well supplemented by further amplifications of aesthetic principles. In the chapter on plastics, for a small example, a paragraph deals nicely with qualities of transparency and their function of enabling the viewer to see what his mind knows is there. A successful combination of a treatise on metier and principles of appreciation.
