KIRKUS REVIEW

In this brief work a French-Jewish scholar of repute undertakes to show how Christian theologians and commentators have erroneously disseminated three doctrines which have contributed to anti-Semitism: (1) that the dispersion of the Jews was due to ""divine retribution, (2) that Judaism was decadent at the beginning of the Christian era, and (3) that the Jews crucified Jesus"". To this task he brings an impressive arraignment of scholars and ecclesiastic authorities both to show the justice of his accusation and to support the revision of teaching he calls for. Although at points the author may seem to overstate his case, if he is even partially right, far-reaching revision of Christian teaching will be required to remove these injustices. The writing is clear, forceful, and well within the grasp of laymen.
