A girls' mystery story laid in the country not far from Washington. Budge and his fifteen-year old sister, Tenny, go off to spend the summer with an eighty-two year old erratic great-aunt in her beautiful old house. The plot revolves around a crook of a nurse house-keeper, who is quietly selling off all the best antiques; a crank of a handy-man that the young call F.F. for Fine Feathers; a paying girl guest who turns out to be exceedingly rich; and a problem about property rights for a dam. The characters are good enough and the action fairly exciting but to an adult reader the denouement seems obvious. The title comes from the name of an old canal boat that the young fry fix up for themselves.
