KIRKUS REVIEW

An historical novel, of the turn of the 19th century, which retails the adventures of handsome Angus MacLeod, plantation born in the Valley of the Shenandoah. Tiring of the safeness of his life there, Angus goes off to trade furs along the Missouri, meets en route a girl named Lucy Montgomery, whose father is quite mad. Angus falls in love with Lucy and together they leave for the Missouri Fur Company; Lucy has a miscarriage on the way, and Angus is briefly tempted by another woman; and they finally reach the Sioux territory when Indian troubles begin. Underlying all of this is the basic issue of slavery, which Lucy abhors... Good adventure, and lots of it, for period- picaresque entertainment.
