THE SHENANDOAH

28th in the Rivers of America series, this differs from the others in its emphasis on counties, legend, romance and history rather than commerce, cities, etc.- and by the cent on the importance of the Civil War in this region. There's the usual leadoff of explorers, settlers and pioneers, on young Washington and the Indian massacres, there's the expansion after the Revolution; there's the long stretch of the Civil War, with what shifts of victory and defeat meant to the people of the Valley --and the long struggle out of devastation afterwards. Then on to the present day, good history and bad, a scenic trip along the Skyline Drive, and the revolt that changed the planning for ding the Valley.
