After Cute Chick, Sweet Chick, and Good Chick are hatched, it looks as if the occupant of the last egg must be Slow Chick. But Jenny Hen is sure that he'll eventually earn a better name, even though he does seem slow now--pausing in the middle of every lesson to watch the clouds go by, or to yawn, till even Jenny is becoming discouraged. But when the last chick runs fast to trick the dreaded cat and save the day, he is given the proud name of Quick Chick. Humorously expressive barnyard animals enliven the colorful illustrations for this appealing combination of familiar themes. In contrast to most ""easy readers,"" this one uses a very easy, repetitive vocabulary--making it suitable either for true beginning readers or for toddlers--without sacrificing the natural cadence of the story's dialogue and narration.
