Ten mice, sporting a variety of outfits, come together one by one for an exciting afternoon of fun. “One mouse sits alone and blue. [turn the flap] Her friend joins her. That makes two.” Hopping up on a nearby dandelion leaf, Mouse Two invites her to tea—a dropped box of cookies and a discarded tea bag provide the refreshments. Already nibbling away at a cookie, Mouse Three joins the pair; a shout from Mouse Four wakes the trio from their nap, as he calls for their help to rescue Mouse Five, trapped inside a bottle of soda, and so it continues. As night falls, they all snuggle under a candy-bar wrapper, in numerical order, of course. Full pages support two-third–page flaps that reveal each new friend—and the matching rhyme. Softly muted and whimsical watercolor illustrations accompany the inventive and lyrical text that offers more emphasis on adventure than counting. (Picture book. 3-5)
