Except that the map is mutilated by the centerfold, losing much territory delineated in the text, this is an adequate if hardly stimulating introduction to the topography and climate, the history, economy and culture of Yugoslavia. Particular attention is paid to the various regions -- now separate republics -- and their religious and linguistic differences, all of which is crucial to understanding the country. The obligatory descriptions of cities, and mention of sports, festivals and educational system are included also, plus a superficial (but not unfair) explanation of government policy, foreign and domestic. The illustrations omit much that is referred to in the text; the text, however, covers virtually all that is usually required by assignments.
