A pedantic tour of the earth's crust, displaying little imagination in organization or expression. There is a barrage of such facts as the relief from Mount Everest to the Mindanao Trench, and the repeated misstatement that 11% of the continents consists of continental shelf; theories of ocean floor spreading, composition of inner space, volcanism, earthquakes, and mountain-building are usually supported with explanations and evidence. With chapters on rocks and minerals besides this is a rather condensed dose of information, but Matthews has included a nice complement of photographs and drawings and a glossary. Utilitarian.
