A delightful story of hard work and its reward set in a poor village in India. The illustrations and text catch the barefoot, grinning charm of Mul Chand who wanted awfully to have a fine cap to wear to wonderful Bombay with his uncle. But a cap cost eight annas and that seemed impossible. However, Mul Chand finds work -- running errands, helping the oil press man, even caring for the goats of the Mean One -- but then the school bully takes all the annas. The courage and intelligence, which come to his aid in saving the store man from a deadly cobra, win him his cap. Understated, appealing story with charming format.
