A new monster invading the world of Faery unearths old hatred, betrayal, and heartache.
In this new trilogy set in the world of The Iron Fey stories, Robin Goodfellow, aka Puck, self-proclaimed World’s Greatest Prankster, is the protagonist. He is interrupted in his latest schemes by a chance encounter with Keirran, King of the Forgotten, who is attempting to contact his mother, the Iron Queen, about a disturbance in the Between. This sets off a quest that revisits beloved characters from previous books while introducing new ones. In the ensuing battles, Puck struggles with his cruel and savage past self and buried hurts. For the uninitiated, the steady stream of characters with complicated backstories and memories related to past books may at first appear daunting to digest. Kagawa, however, does an excellent job of pacing the introductions, connecting the relationship histories, and providing space for all these players to be fleshed out and interact with one another. While the sidhe are mostly described as being similar: “slender, beautiful, otherworldly, and pointy-eared,” with variations in hair and eye color, the story does go into some innate prejudice and bias against beings in different realms. There is no shortage of humor and action, as is to be expected when following Puck’s adventures. When the quips stop, readers know things are about to get serious.

The Phantom of the Opera served as inspiration, but this wouldn’t last on Broadway.
Stephanie and her family move into an old mansion rumored to have been put under a curse after a turn-of-the-20th-century rich boy meddled with an Egyptian mummy.
After her young sister complains about strange events, high school student Stephanie befriends Lucas, a geeky, good-looking boy, and meets the other members of SPOoKy, the Scientific Paranormal Organization of Kentucky: Charlotte, Wes, and Patrick. Stephanie learns the history of her new home from Lucas, who attracts her romantic attention, but the usually levelheaded girl is soon drawn to Erik, the handsome phantom who first comes to her in dreams. The story is told in chapters narrated by Stephanie, Lucas, and Zedok, whose identity is initially a source of confusion to Stephanie. Zedok appears wearing different masks, “personified slivers” of his soul, representing states of mind such as Wrath, Madness, and Valor. Meanwhile, until gifted singer Stephanie came along and he could write songs for her, Erik’s dreams were thwarted; he wanted to be a composer but his family expected him to become a doctor. In the gothic horror tradition, Erik’s full background and connection with Zedok are slowly revealed. Romantic dream sequences are lush and swoon-y, but the long, drawn-out battle to end the curse, aided by a celebrity clairvoyant, is tedious, and the constant introduction of Erik’s different personae is confusing. Most characters default to White; Patrick is Black.

A second chance prompts a deadly game of wits.
Lu Mingshin is about to be executed. Her fiance, Prince Ren, has ordered her death after using her family’s wealth to vie for the position of crown prince from his half brothers, each of them born to one of the widower king’s Royal Ladies. If that wasn’t enough, Mingshin learns that her Uncle Yi arranged her mother’s murder, and Aylin, her two-faced noblewoman cousin, will be marrying Ren instead. On the verge of death, Mingshin desperately wishes for another chance—only to see flashes of light and wake up two years in the past. With her memories of the future intact, Mingshin intends to not become a victim again, training in combat and vowing to endear herself to King Reifeng to secure her family’s safety. Strange dreams reveal the source of the magic that allowed her to jump back in time. A powerful mage is also on Mingshin’s tail, along with the ruthless enemies she’s already aware of. As Mingshin starts to rewrite her life’s story, new individuals come into play: a visiting Elder with questionable motives; Princess Yunle, who becomes a new best friend; and Prince Jieh, one of Ren’s rivals for the throne. Set in a fantasy world reminiscent of imperial China, this debut novel’s structure has a few oddities, but the clever premise and intriguing and suspenseful plot will keep readers engaged.
