How to break the grip of an all-bad-news season for San Diego's station KSDG? ``Figure skating is upbeat,'' opines junior sports reporter Kit Powell's station manager, who's obviously been living in a cave for the past year. He doesn't know that sending Kit to cover the Bethlehem Pro-Am Invitational will turn up evidence of (1) determined anti-tobacco picketers protesting the tournament's sponsor; (2) racial threats against several of the top skaters (a swastika to the Israeli, a jar of rice and maggots to the Southeast Asian, a strangled black Barbie doll to the African- American); (3) a hit-and-run aimed at sidelining doubles veteran Susu Jenrette; (4) ugly revelations about the lowlife companion of bubbly Joelle Kistler, Olympic gold medalist and America's sweetheart; and—of course—(5) murder most foul: first the German coach who switched from training Greta Braun, Joelle's Ice Princess rival, to Joelle herself; then—after Kit has linked her killing to rumors that the local White Nation chapter is behind a series of executions of street people—the undercover cop who helped her infiltrate the group, to his sorrow and hers. A full plate? No, there's still time for fashion wars with Channing Strummer, the glamorous ex-wife of Kit's off-again cop boyfriend, and the usual simmering catfights with vapid news anchor Tricia Blaize. Following Kit's friendly, underplotted debut (Jinx, 1991), hardworking Robitaille provides something for everyone, though the resulting overspiced confection may be too much for all but the most over-the-top fans of Nancy and Tonya.
