I AM A HOME SCHOOLER

Teigen is a nine-year-old who has never gone to a regular school. She starts her day early with family prayer, barn chores, and piano practice before tackling the academic subjects until time for lunch. Afternoons are free for less-structured activities, and once a week she meets with a group of other home schoolers in a church. An art teacher visits Teigen's home twice a month. Most aspects of her day are depicted in hand-tinted photographs. In her first book, Voetberg stresses the flexibility of home schooling. The discovery of owl pellets sparks an impromptu science lesson; an accident requiring a trip to the emergency room cancels class for the day. Gardening, travel, and a visit to the father's sawmill all provide learning opportunities. This model for home schooling won't appeal to everyone, but Voetberg successfully introduces aspects of this lifestyle to those curious about a growing movement.
