Julius Lester is the Field Secretary of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and if you leave off the ""Non-"" you get the action. And the book should make ""honky"" check out his siege supplies because this black power spokesman means it when he says ""It is clear that America must be destroyed. There is no other way."" Hysterical radicalism? Or ""logical progression."" Mr. Lester has a persuasive point of view as he reviews the black man's history of resistance in America--Nat Turner, Frederick Douglass, W. E. B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey. But granted ""cultural genocide"" induced by slavery, perpetuated by a conforming society; granted racism, the slavery of poverty, the agonizingly slow process of human rights reform, disillusionment with passive protest and token welfare development; granted the problems and inadequacies of capitalism, misunderstandings between white liberals and black leaders and above all granted that the black man must find and cherish himself as an identity and be accepted as a human being. . . is it not a profound mistake to dismiss the March on Washington as a ""sham and a disgrace""; to denigrate the power of passive protest and castrate temperate leadership. And it seems strangely illogical that Mr. Lester (so keen at ferreting out the subversive tactics he finds apparent in Whitey's liberal ""trick bag"" of love and morality) should envision a post-revolutionary society where the black man's ""spirit of community and humanistic love prevail."" A deliberately inflammatory tract. . . Mr. Lester's catastasis.
