WHO KNOWS JULIE GORDON?

Julie Gordon is a very pregnant, very private young woman newly arrived in a Pennsylvania suburb, living in a recently-purchased house while her husband is supposedly working in Alaska. She arouses the curiosity of several women in the neighborhood--including Ida Pelham, who somehow associates mysterious Julie with the New Jersey town where Ida used to live. Then Julie, minus the baby, is found murdered; so Ida, with the help of her photographer daughter, delves into the past and uncovers the baby-breeding and -selling career of Jane Cowell, a.k.a. Julie Gordon. Lots of chat, little mystery (the murderer's identity is obvious early on)--a familiar drowsy and gentle meander only for those who've enjoyed Booton's previous suburban diversions.
