Kat Colorado doesn't mess around. Only a few days after she rescues Jude Hudson from a car crash evidently meant for his wife Amanda, Sacramento's sassy shamus (Copy Kat, 1992) has not only identified the hooligans Louden Industries—whose defective heart- valves Amanda had threatened to blow the whistle on—hired to scare Amanda off (harassment, vandalism, assault), but she's also recruited her advice-column friend Charity Collins to give mousy Amanda a makeover. Her client is a new woman, and the case is closed—or it would be if Amanda weren't killed in a convenient household accident. But a closer look into Amanda's life reveals disturbing undercurrents: She was cheating on Jude; she'd antagonized everybody at work; her zealotry was even getting to the Louden victims she was pressuring to tell their story to the legislature and the press. And Kat wonders who didn't want to kill saintly Amanda. Since Kat's forays into high seriousness only provide enough foreshadowing to wreck the puzzle, ignore them and enjoy another welcome spin around the block with the heroine who acts as if she'd invented Kute.
