Narrated by ten year old Val who knows she caused her uncle's death, this saga of Scandinavian immigrants in the midwest is overstuffed with odd characters and incidents. But the author maintains an amazing degree of control over the sprawling story which unravels at a rapid speed. Girls will be absorbed by Val and her bumbling trip towards maturity (which she doesn't quite reach). Romance, success, struggle, death-- grief, happiness, love, bitterness, are all here in generous portions, and the author has done a slick job of avoiding over-sentimentality.
