THE HUMANITY OF GOD

In the world of theology, Karl Barth, the Swiss theologian, has long been a man to be reckoned with. Here the English speaking public is given three of his recent significant essays which indicate the basic emphases of his present theological position, and show the development in his thinking. His insistence on the absolute lordship and preeminence of God is still here, but now he sees that the deity of God must include his humanity. Hence the first essay which gives the book its title. In the second essay, ""Evangelical Theology in the 19th Century"", he examines the theology of liberalism against which he and his followers revolted; and in ""The Gift of Freedom"" he shows that man's freedom springs from God's freedom in which he chose man to be his child and partner. Man is ever therefore directly responsible to God, who ""reached out for man in specific and direct encounter"". These essays are compact thinking and do not make easy reading, but they do reward serious attention with the satisfaction that one has shared some of the thoughts of one of the master theologians of this generation.
