This is an altogether remarkable and exciting book. Karl Barth, one of the leading, most highly respected, and profound theologians of our day, answers inadvertently the question so often asked, -- can the scholarly mind express itself in terms the average man can understand? Indeed he can, -- or rather Karl Barth can. Here we have a collection of wars, living, humble, and winning sermons which he preached on occasion to the inmates of a Swiss prison. Professor Barth reveals a great power to enter into the situation of the audience, and to speak relevantly to it. But much more than that, when he preaches to prisoners he preaches to himself, and to us, as dying sinners and yet as men redeemed from death by the gracious art of God. This book deserves the greatest attention possible, for the author meets the need of every man with compelling truth of evangelical faith which challenges and moves the reader, and will not let him go.
