F. O. MATTHIESSEN (1902-1950): A Collective Portrait

A memorial tribute to the late Harvard professor--author and editor of such notable volumes as American Renaissance. The James Family, the Oxford Book of American Verse. Included are two of Professor Matthiessen's essays--The Education of a Socialist and Of Crime and Punishment, the latter an evaluation of Dreiser's An American Tragedy--brief eulogies by former students of Matthiessen as a teacher and outstanding American scholar, a critique by Professor Henry N. Smith of the University of Minnesota on Matthiessen's American Renaissance, and an article by Mr. Sweezy on Matthiessen's labor and political activities. The latter part of the book contains brief statements by friends and associates--notably Alfred Kazin, and a preliminary bibliography.
