An ancient vampire realizes the key to revitalizing his race lies in the hands of a con artist.
Mikhail Aristov, now known as Michael, is the last true vampire. After the Ancient Ones were wiped out by a sect of dangerous hunters called the Sortiari, the only ones who remain besides Michael are dhampirs, semi-vampires that are born rather than made. Should Michael find his mate, that would all change. He’d be able to turn the dhampirs into full vampires and bring back the vampire population. Michael lives a lonely life in modern-day Los Angeles, with the weight of restoring his community heavy on his shoulders. Claire Thompson is a hustler, always working on one more con. A chance encounter with Mikhail at a nightclub allows her to sneak away with his expensive watch, not realizing until she disappears into the night that she’s given him much more than she took. He realizes that she’s his mate, and their souls are now tethered. If Mikhail can find Claire again, it would mean the return of the vampires, but should the Sortiari get wind of her identity, they would surely kill her. The race to find Claire and stay a step ahead of a dangerous, shadowy organization keeps the pace and tension high. This is a spicy paranormal romance that is very much a product of its time, for better and worse. Originally released in 2015, it was cresting a wave of the subgenre’s popularity, with domineering vampire heroes, high heat, and plenty of melodrama. It hits a certain nostalgia factor, which may not land with readers who are newer to the genre.
A paranormal rerelease that might do well with romance readers who enjoy equal parts action and spice.
