Snap Like A Crocodile! (12 pp.; $6.95; Aug.; 1-899607-40-4): This candy-colored flap book from Burns (see review, above) once again invites children to imitate the animals. Flaps lift to reveal crocodiles, a dog, parrots, pigs, and sharks. Each two-page spread is introduced by a question, e.g., “Who is snuffling in the orchard?” The animals are just barely in evidence before the flap is turned, when the text book urges onlookers to snap, bark, squawk, sniff, oink, or give a toothy grin like a shark. Burns’s highly stylized artwork has immediate visual appeal—and even in its maze-like, dreamy state is a mild introduction to habitats. (Lift-the-flap. 2-5)
