THE ROMANCE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE

There is little of the lecture room here, but much of enjoyment and individualized interpretation, for a harmonious, tasteful study. It is virtually an illustrated history of English literature, which presents, in conjunction with a lovely bit of bookmaking, fine-drawn criticism and appreciation by seven authors of unusual standing. Scholarship is subdued but inherent in each estimate as Sir Herbert Grierson evaluates the English Bible, Lord David Cecil the English poets, Elizabeth Bowen the English novelists, Graham Greens the English dramatists, E. L. Woodward the British historians, Kenneth Matthews British philosophers -- and the editor contributes a witty, personalized appraisal of diarists and journalists.
