nny Wheeler, who wants to become a veterinarian, spends her summer outside San Francisco helping out on Pop's horse ranch, and-specifically- training Poconada (ttle- Nothing), a runty but appealingly skittish small horse. Poconada has no real financial value, but Pop's landlord puts a price on him- Pop's lease can be reewed if Poconada can fetch $1000. Penny not only keeps him from being shot, when an accident seems to make him not even worth saving, but makes the bargain which ensures the lease and puts Poconada in the hands of the little girl who loves him the landlord's granddaughter).... The story holds up better than the youngsters who disappear before the last page so that this is basically substandard for subeens. Still, given a girl and a horse, they're not choosy.
