THE WRONG MAN

Though she might suggest a bold accent wall to her clients, Manhattan interior decorator Kit Finn leads a quiet private life—until one wild night in Florida sets her on a different, far more dangerous course.

In White’s (Eyes On You, 2014, etc.) breezy if predictable stand-alone, Kit is trying to squeeze in as much relaxation as possible while on vacation in Islamorada—think Netflix’s Bloodline—when she meets the attractive Matt Healy. The two sleep together but agree the relationship can go no further, so Kit is surprised when Matt contacts her back home in New York with the offer of a home-cooked meal at his apartment. But she’s more surprised when she arrives and finds that the real Matt Healy is a stranger who claims his wallet was stolen several days earlier. While this provides an interesting and necessary plot twist, it also reveals what will become an increasingly irksome habit of White’s: undercutting nearly every crucial piece of information in the next chapter, deflating much of the suspense. As Kit reluctantly works with the real Matt, a portfolio manager, to find out how she got fooled and what the imposter’s endgame could be, the faux Matt—who she soon learns is really Garrett Kelman—reappears with a story of conspiracies and insider trading, which Kit initially dismisses but soon realizes could be the truth when she’s pulled into a murder investigation in Florida. When a second murder inquiry hits perilously close to home in Manhattan, Kit realizes that working with Garrett might be her only chance.

While the whodunit aspects are fairly pedestrian, Kit makes for an intriguing heroine who holds her own.
