On the dimity side, dainty, wispy and very pure in heart. It is a story of a little French village on the eve of war -- the lovable peasants who know what has happened even before it happens -- and the American girl and her artist brother who settle there. This has less substance than other work the author has done, it is almost a bit precious -- but there are readers who like it that way. Tony paints and Linda watches over his creature comforts; they take a girl boarder who is supposed to be literary but is really more concerned with the opposite sex. A young French writer livens the scene for Linda -- comes the war, and separation. Rentals chiefly.
