No spur to reading. Victor Green admires the boots carried by the twelve-year-old he meets on the road, and Toby explains that his father died wearing them at a rodeo. But Grandpa, who despised the boy's father and confines his conversation to ""suit yourself, boy,"" throws the boots in the river. Toby retrieves the lone spur dropped en route to the dunking and runs off. Victor, out wife-hunting, can't take him in, so Toby shacks up with five girls whose momma's away until he suddenly realizes their horse looks like the one who killed his father so he runs away again. Several coincidences later, he finds out the horse is innocent, so he can accept the housing bid from Victor (now married to the five feamles' mother); he even gets more than a grunt from Grandpa--the other spur.
