Big Mose Humphreys was a wonderful character, a Paul Bunyan giant of a guy who got bigger and bigger and bigger as more and more tales were spun about him and his mid-nineteenth century doings in New York City. Big Mose and his four foot Irish pal Syksey, paraded the town from the Battery and the Bowery to Washington Market and back again. Syksey had to run to keep up with a man who smoked 24 inch cigars and sat on warehouses- but they managed to help the needy, give parties for the mayor and aldermen, and have a generally rousting time. Eleven direct and robust tales about him here are excellent folklore.
