THIS UNION CAUSE

Slow gestation followed the germinal beginnings of organized American labor in the colonial craft societies. Miners, railroad workers and steel workers,- the Knights of Labor found their rights to organize and to strike impeded by the judiciary. The milestones in jurisprudence which advanced or retarded labor's cause are cited here, recounting the blow-by-blow results of each fray:-the Pullman case, the U.S. Carnegie Steel case and the pitched battle of the United Mine Workers The author has limited her sphere to the history of unions, excluding negative aspects of union-ism. There is no mention of any union-racketeering connection. The narrative flows easily, presenting basic concepts in simple terms, affording basic understanding of labor's story.
