STORY-LIVES OF AMERICAN COMPOSERS

I enjoyed this immensely. It is both informative and refreshing -- the story, really, of national American music, of our folk music from the spirituals and Indian music to the marches of Sousa, the songs of Stephen Foster, the music of Handy and ershwin and Kern. The life of each composer is fascinatingly told. Delightfully written. With a list of representative records.
