MOTHER BUTLER OF MARYMOUNT

This is the story of the life and work of Mother Marie Josephine Butler, associated largely with the development of Catholic education in the U.S. It tells of her childhood in Ireland, her association with the religious order of the Sacred Heart of Mary in France, and later in Portugal. Of greatest interest to American readers is the description of her work in the United States, the establishment of the Marymount institutions for the education of Catholic girls of school and college level. In this she was aided by the benevolence of her cousin Mr. James Butler and the support of Archibishop (later Cardinal) Farley and other eminent prelates. Primarily a Catholic market. Mother Butler was not only a devout religious, but an educator, an administrator, a church leader of outstanding ability, and a woman who won to herself the friendship of the lowliest student as well as the outstanding churchmen.
