Likeable enough family chronicle, laid in small Kansas town in the '80's. The Chautuauqua was the high spot of the summer, and the family finances were governed by the need to save enough to attend the Assembly. During the period, various family dramas come to a head, and the mother acts as dea ex machina. A ""period piece"" with a very human mother managing to retain her independence. Good conservative item, with a homespun quality that will endear it to the readers.
