Story of poor whites in the Deep South, with more of the quality of Marjoric Fawlings than of Faulkner. A depressing story, but so beautifully told, and so simply, that one is left with a sense of a certain nobility and sweep and beauty in the character of Bachel that makes it worth delving through the muck of the rest of the Ropers, legitimate and illegitimate. Sordid without being deliberately vicious. Not for the squeamish, however.
