Abou's heart's desire was a donkey of his own. Money was hard to come by in the Kasbah, but what Abou could scrounge as a guide to the bazaar was faithfully saved and counted. A tourist, lavish with her tips, increased Abou's horde up after a tour that shows-- in pictures and words-- the Arabian scene of rugs, fezzes, mosques, and snake charming. It wasn't enough for even the thinnest, oldest donkey on sale. However, Abou acquired a small and faltering one from a mean drover who expected his beast to die anyway. By love, food and a departure from daily beatings, Abou brings his donkey back to health. It's a pleasant, easy reader that yet manages to catch the flourishing rhetoric of the Near East and the pictures are brightly drawn with humorous exaggeration.
