SAINT GEORGE:A Christmas Mummers' Play

Pub Date: Nov. 15th, 1967
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin

Patched together from many old plays and dances, its sense pieced out here and there for modern audiences, and revived with a dash of hokumpokum,"" this is an old entertainment complete with audience reaction, likely to succeed as self-contained reading, sure to arouse enthusiasm if performed as directed. Miss Miller respects her material but is not cramped by it; she has assembled a spirited company of mountebanks and buffoons and turned them loose in a farce full of surprises and bits of business that kids will roar at. She hopes, of course, that they will play it in their own and/or neighbors' living rooms, and provides suggestions for staging and costuming at the end. Youngsters who see the fun Wallace Tripp's characters are having will want to take their own bows.
