KIRKUS REVIEW

For six days, Grandpa fishes near St. Lucia; on the seventh he works on his boat instead of going to church. Grammy scolds, but Grandpa knows that ""God is in the sea and sky. . .and in ourselves. . .I don't need to go to a little house to meet God."" When the fish grow scarce because the big boats take too many, Grandpa pines; then he invents a new livelihood that keeps him in his boat: growing the sea-moss used by the island people to make a nourishing drink. Orr illustrates her sympathetic portrait of this wise, gentle black man with nicely composed paintings in the brilliant hues of the Caribbean.
