IT CHANCED TO RAIN by Kathleen Bullock

The jacket copy calls this ""an old nursery rhyme,"" though LC says it's fiction; in any case, the sprightly verse about 14 animals (three each of mice, cats, dogs, and ducks plus two pigs) who sally forth on a cheerful expedition, which is cut short by a sudden shower, has been updated with the addition of a dryer for their wet garments. The satisfying joke is that when noses are counted after the retreat, the ducks are missing--and are found happily swimming, oblivious of their friends' worry. They are justly rewarded, however: when everyone else comes down with the sniffles, the ducks have to do the dishes. Broad double-spreads allow the large crew to parade across the pages in nicely varied patterns; the style of the full-color art is appealing, though not distinguished.
