The coverup for what, to others, has been grim tragedy in this account of life in the , as the author, with a flighty playgirl career behind her, tells of life under Jap domination. American, married to a British official, she is unable to take the war seriously, even when her husband forces her to take their daughter to Manila; there she assumes nationality after Pearl Harbor. Back to Shanghal and a madhouse communal life, and making the best of prison camp restrictions and discomforts, with unexpected repatriation on the Gripsholm. Job drifting, from Roseland hostess to elevator operator at the Waldorf, gestures towards financial security; the thrill of VF lay, and her daughter's chickenpox. Ludicrous but real.
