KIRKUS REVIEW

The chronicles of Thor, Loki and the long line of Scandinavian deities that populated Asgaard have been competently retold and illustrated by Kathleen Elgin. The familiar events begin with the dispelling of the ice by Surtr, the flame guardian, and continues through the battle between the gods and the giants, the establishment of heaven and bell and the subsequent deeds of heaven's occupants- Odin and the loss of his eye, Thor's regaining of his hammer, Loki and the golden apples, etc. There is a note too, on the meaning of legends as explanatory tales.
