More an adventure story than a mystery, as a trio of American boys share an experience on the Normandy beach, and one -- a Mexican -- dies. Gavin, holding the memory of the dead boy's lovely twin sister, Fern, determines to go down to Texas to see her. Duke, a different type, turns up later, in time to be let in on the queer goings around the Curiel hacienda. Violent death --apparitions -- fear -- superstition -- quarrels -- and suspicion that a family is about to be wiped out eventually lead to a surprise solution, not wholly taking care of all that happened on routs, but satisfactory if one accepts the possibility of contact with the other world. Crime Club.
