This is slow in getting under way, but once started, it carries on with plenty of incident and an incidental picture of customs and life of Bali. The story of a boy who can no longer live with his stepmother, and who sets out for a distant village to live with an unknown uncle. The moral issues may cause some eyebrows to raise -- but as told they seem a part of the native psychology. The preparations for the trip, the adventures of the trip itself, particularly the cock fight, and the surprise ending make it a thoroughly readable story.
