She devotes separate chapters to Leningrad, the ""Venice of the North"", and the ""golden Ukraine"", and throughout, children are her heroes and heroines, for it is their lives she speaks of -- how they attend school, where they spend their holidays, where they live. Sixteen photographs add to the general pleasure of a serious minded, unpolitical introduction to an unknown but increasingly vital land.
