SEAGULL SAM

A younger brother gives his siblings their comeuppance when he learns to fly like the seagulls in this imaginative latest from Clark and Huntington. Told he is too little to fly kites, Sam sulks until he spies some seagulls pecking at the cracks in the picnic table. Pretending to fly around the yard, he completes his costume with a huge white dress shirt off the clothesline. Perched on the picnic table, he is surprised and delighted when the wind lofts him high above his coastal Maine town. Upon landing, Sam gets the satisfaction of feeding his siblings’ words right back to them: “You are too big. You might get dragged on the ground. You might get hurt.” Eating only half a sandwich so he won’t get big too fast, Sam looks forward to tomorrow—another windy day. Huntington’s watercolors perfectly complement the windy, coastal setting. Young readers’ imaginations will take flight along with Sam as they are treated to a bird’s-eye view. Nonetheless, excepting local audiences, this isn’t really a necessary purchase. (Picture book. 4-8)
