In whatever form she chooses to write, Kay Boyle, with her perceptive vision and passion- disciplined by superb artistry, is a poet. This volume of collected poems, if of today, spans the past too. She speaks not only of El Greco but of Franco's Spain as well. Though partisan to all countries and people that have suffered persecution, she is never rhetorical. As in nature, Kay Boyle's book reveals an ordered- never rigid- universe. Her poems are living, returning the reader to the world's beauty that had seemed all but lost. But she never evades the sad, the tragic, the ugly, to achieve this end. It is a tribute to her talent that- just as a symphony whose intermittent discord only heightens response- she offers a comprehensive poetic view.
