Father is a snake charmer and Sunil is his apprentice who doesn't have the tunes in order. When sister Shanta pipes Rance the cobra awake, Sunil's playing starts Rance off instead of putting her back to sleep, but the elliptical advice of a guru and luck so fortuitous that the children aren't aware of it sends Ranee back to her basket before their father arrives. As a story for the young this raises more questions than it answers, as an introduction to India it's more exotic than sensible.
