Six progressive episodes in the fortunes of General Motors' (fictional) finest achievement, a computerized armored tank called the ""Bolo."" The saga begins in a devastated and regressed 21st-century Philadelphia, where the local ""Baron"" is trying to rule the neighboring savages with the aid of a rusty Bolo Mark II (first deployed in 1995) and Mark III (2020). The other stories follow successive models through the millenia, up to and beyond the great Bolo corps that are assembled and disassembled after the development of a self-aware Mark XX Model B motivated by ""the honor of the regiment."" Attractive idea, adroitly worked out.
