A prolific writer of sea and land adventure stories- some of which have been excellent and all of which have been better than average, takes an incident in our naval history and expands it into a suspenseful account. Briefly it is the events after the Saginaw, a ship sent in 1870 to establish a Midway Island coaling station, abandoned the job only to be wrecked on another island nearby. Talbot and Halford were among the four officers who volunteered to sail to Hawaii to get help sooner for the rest, and the account of their small boat trip that ended tragically at Hanalei Bay, on Kauai, has its exciting moments.
