A novel in the South hind school, but not to be thrown aside as imitative, as it is distinctly original, and entertaining reading. The story of a famous writer, dying of cancer, who goes, with his disciples, to an island. His son joins him and introduces into the jealous atmosphere of the literary group, a famous playwright and the couple whose marriage almost comes a cropper. There is an aura of D. H. Lawrence -- of Noel Coward -- a bit of satire -- but underyling it all, the tragedy of thwarted human relations. Winter is the author of The Rats of Norway -- (It's a Pity About People) and a play, The Shining Hour. And -- he can write.
