KIRKUS REVIEW

A workaday, sentimental novel about well-meaning people in dutch situations which might happen to almost anyone: like Tom Welland who is to be sent to Vietnam to make a trial bomb run over actual targets; or Margaret, the wife who has been miserable ever since he left her; or Holly, the younger girl whom he really loves; although the death of his son reminds him that Margaret is the neediest case now. Finally Tom is sent over, shot down twice, captured twice, and after a period in solitary, makes his second escape at the cost of the life of his friend, and he returns home to make the gesture to Margaret who just as nobly refuses. The marketplace commonplace -- as if there were anything else to say.
